Lennart Heyndels (°1990) is a Belgian bassist and composer based in Brussels. He has studied at the conservatories of The Hague, Amsterdam and Paris. With his group How Town he has released four albums. Lennart’s music is characterised by a fluid mix of styles, and a balance between light-hearted simplicity and serene introspection. At EMS he is working on a project that researches the effect of sound on the subconscious mind. By creating dense soundscapes the listener receives too much information to rationally process and has the possibility to enter a trance-like state. In this situation it is up to the listener to be creative and it is his/her personal experience which will determine how he/she hears the sound and what parts of the sound he/she focuses on. By triggering this creativity the listener can enter a state of active listening, which may have a transformative effect. Lennart has been awarded several prizes among which: Keep An Eye Award 2017, Theater Aan Zee Jong Muziek 2014, Dutch Jazz Competition 2014, European Young Artist’s Jazz Award Burghausen 2013 and Prinses Christina Jazz Concours 2010. He has performed all over the world (including Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Poland, Latvia, Kenia, South-Korea, China, Canada, … ) and has performed at major festivals and concert venues such as Bimhuis, Flagey, Ancienne Belgique, Handelsbeurs, Bijloke, Lantaren/Venster, North Sea Jazz, Jazz Middelheim, X-Jazz (Berlijn), Safaricom Jazz Festival (Nairobi), Vancouver Jazz Festival.
