Dorit Chrysler

Dorit Chrysler is an Austrian born Theremin virtuoso, composer, musicologist and sound artist, who has co-founded the NY Theremin Society.

After her studies of musicology in Vienna, she relocated to New York in 1986 and
is currently based in Berlin and New York. Her work explores the application of
the theremin instrument in various art disciplines. The Theremin, based on electro-magnetic fields, is one of the first electrical instruments. Played without touch,
it was created in 1920. 

Dorit is the founder of “Dame Electric” a festival dedicated to Female Pioneers
in Electronic Music and she is the recipient of the “Best Film Music 2025” prize Diagonale Film Festival and the Austrian State Composition Stipend. Dorit has performed as a theremin soloist with the San Francisco Symphony on several
occasions and has been teaching her curriculum about Theremin Playing strategies
for over two decades. 

She has performed worldwide (Concert House Vienna, Coachella, NY Metropolitan Museum, Palais Tokyo Paris, Aichi Worldfair etc.) Sound commissions include the
MoMA (“Calder Plays Theremin”), Klang Festival, Siemens Foundation and Venice Biennale, residencies included the Gaite Lyrique Paris, Pioneer Works and the Detroit Knight Foundation. Her music is part of collections at the Guggenheim Museum, Moderna Museet Stockholm and others. 

She has written music for film (Happyland), TV (“Best German TV Krimi Episode 2025 “Tatort”) and Off broadway theater (The Bestiary). Dorit has been a participating artist at the 2023 Shanghai Biennale and has continuously collaborated with CERN as part of their Science Outreach. She has produced a ten piece Theremin orchestra performance for the LA Disney Hall. Numerous recordings of her music have been released via Fridman Gallery, The NY Theremin Society, In My Room Records (DE), The Prurience Factory (US), Monika Enterprise (DE), Plag dich nicht (AU), Plastic Tray Records (US), and Mute (GB).

Dorit is the current creative director of  the NY Theremin Society, a non profit platform to support Theremin applications in various art disciplines.  The NYTS celebrates  its 20th anniversary in 2025.
