Piano frame

The piano frame is a custom-built instrument for sound generation consisting of the steel frame, strings, and soundboard from a standard piano mounted on an adjustable stand to facilitate access to the strings and microphone placement during recording. The piano frame thus lacks both keyboard and hammers.

The piano frame is equipped with a small mixer connected to two transducer speakers mounted on the soundboard to enable processing of pre-recorded audio material and feedback experiments. The piano frame is tuned like a standard piano but may be retuned within reasonable limits by agreement with EMS staff, provided it is done professionally. It is permitted to work with string preparations.
