Welcome to the workshop Tape Itself

Tape is both a medium and an instrument: it can carry and keep sound and be a sound creation instrument on its own. By abusing the recording process and manipulating its physical presence, it still yields new sonic possibilities, a hundred years after its invention.

In this workshop we seek for the sounds of tape itself. The attendee will gain insight into advanced tape techniques, from tape destruction to miking techniques to performative aspects. Basic recording, editing and looping to facilitate the advanced techniques will also be covered.

Hainbach is a Berlin-based composer and sound artist working in the field of electronic music. His artistic practice explores the possibilities of sound through uncommon electronic instruments, tape machines, and test equipment. His music is characterized by experimental working methods and an exploration of the intersections between sound, technology, and composition.

Through his YouTube channel, Hainbach has made experimental techniques in electronic music accessible to a broad international audience. He is also an award-winning film composer, and his works for ensembles have been performed at festivals including Witten, Gaudeamus, and Impuls Festival Halle. The music software and hardware he develops are used by musicians around the world. Hainbach tours regularly and has taught at institutions including Humboldt University, Manchester School of Arts, Hybrid Arts Lab Dresden, and MRC Copenhagen.
