Welcome to a presentation and demonstration of the electroacoustic instrument
The Ekdahl FAR with Karl Ekdahl.
Karl Eldahl is a musician and instrument designer whose main interest creating experimental instruments that can be mass produced on a smaller scale in an attempt to make these economically obtainable to a larger audience. Focus is laid on the interaction in between instrument and human and the exploration of non-traditional sounds and music.
His latest instrument, the Ekdahl FAR, is a single stringed electroacoustic string instrument that is exploring natural overtones through the use of a electronic “bow”. Unlike traditional instruments that varies the frequency to obtain different notes, the Ekdahl FAR excites natural harmonics in a string in order to get different “notes”. The resulting scales requires a different approach to composition and how we normally think of “notes” in music.
The instrument attempts to bridge the acoustic / orchestral world, with the world of modular synthesis and live coding / sequencing by presenting an interface that is both tactile, can be controlled by standards like MIDI and CV and even direct interfacing via RS-232 serial communication. The instrument being a real-world application of music theory and equations, some surprising discoveries and questions have come to light that invites to discussions about sound and music application and philosophy.
